Driver killed after car leaves Lehman Causeway, stops feet from police fuel pumps

A driver was killed early Tuesday when his car left the William Lehman Causeway and came to a stop a few feet from the fuel pumps at the Aventura Police Department. The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of the causeway. Aventura Police said the vehicle was traveling eastbound when, for reasons under investigation, it left the roadway and ended up just short of the department's pumps. The man behind the wheel was pronounced dead at the scene, and police have not released his identity. The causeway is one of Aventura’s main east-west routes, so the crash put an overnight spotlight on a road many residents use to reach the beach corridor. Investigators are still working to determine why the car left the road, and the crash investigation remained open Tuesday afternoon. (NBC 6 South Florida)
